Computing power, advanced models, infrastructure, investment, data, specialist skills and technological expertise are increasingly important resources. Yet access to these resources is far from equal.
This raises a fundamental question: can the AI transformation remain sustainable if its capabilities and benefits are highly concentrated?
FAIR believes resilience provides an important framework for answering this question.
We define AI resilience as the ability of the AI ecosystem to develop sustainably while ensuring that access, opportunities and benefits are sufficiently broad, equal and fair.
Resilience therefore does not simply mean protecting communities from AI risks, nor does it mean using AI to make communities more resilient. It means examining the resilience of the AI ecosystem itself.
An ecosystem characterised by widening digital gaps risks excluding communities, professions, institutions and countries from opportunities created by technological progress.
FAIR therefore focuses on identifying these gaps and understanding how they can be reduced.
Our principle is straightforward:
Accessible AI + Equal AI + Fair AI = Resilient AI
And resilient AI is essential for sustainable AI.
